Lesbian Writing
Velvet Magazine is the arts and literature magazine for lesbian women which was started in August 2004 by editor Naomi Young. We are looking forward to sharing Velvet articles from previous issues, many of which are out of print, with PlanetSappho visitors and members. We also plan to provide some new content for this section of the site which is 100% exclusive and not available in the magazine.
Naomi Young started Velvet to fill the gap for more mature, non-scene lesbians. She is a novelist, columnist and poet; she has had poetry published in various anthologies and her current novel is with an agent. She also writes as international lesbian icon Patty Nazo.
Josie and Alys Henley-Einion are a couple who write collaboratively as well as separately. They met Naomi on an MA course in Creative Writing, which all three have now completed. Josie and Alys have been involved with Velvet since issue 4 in May 2005.
Josie is a computer programmer, webmistress for the Velvet site and writes regularly in Velvet on political and social issues. She has recently had a short story published in an anthology by Legend Press, a literary small press, and has a novel which is now close to publication. Her interests are in lesbian history, digital media and feminism.
Alys is a nurse and a midwife, currently working as a lecturer in midwifery. She writes articles for academic journals regarding midwifery, feminism and alternative therapies, as well as writing regularly for Velvet. Her interests are in health, particularly sexual health and women's health, parenting, and media. Alys is currently studying for a PhD in Creative Writing.
We are delighted that Naomi, Josie and Alys will be sharing their wit and wisdom with all at PlanetSappho. If you would like to submit an article of your own or have any comments or questions to direct to any of our three aforementioned writers, please get in contact via writers@planetsappho.com
